American prospect Smylie Kaufman is playing in the SMBC Singapore Open for the first time as he kickstarts his career after an injury-plagued 2018.
Kaufman turned professional in 2014 after studying and playing college golf at Louisiana State University and was quick to make his mark. After winning the United Leasing Championship on the Web.com Tour in March, 2015, he triumphed on the PGA Tour at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open that October. He shot a sizzling 10-under 61 to come from seven shots back and win by a stroke from a group of six players.
Similar to Prayad Marksaeng’s victory at the 2017 SMBC Singapore Open, Kaufman was in the clubhouse a couple of hours before the final group finished.
Kaufman is recovering from wrist and elbow issues that curtailed his 2018 season and the 27 year old firmly believes his best golf is in front of him.
